Summary

Electric power blackouts affecting large areas are, in most cases, the result of a combination of any number of distinct failures. How can such hidden chain reactions be identified beforehand ? And what is the frequency of such events ? With these questions in mind a novel type of simulation approach for reliability analysis of electric power grids was developed. The method allows for the simulation of a system in its behavior over time under consideration of failure sequences. Analyses of a model system as well as the Swiss high-voltage grid show the functionality of this method.
