Summary

Within the MEMFIS project, ice load measurements were carried out at three locations in Switzerland. The installed instrument, the IceMonitor, was not capable of measuring icing reliably and automatically. However, severe icing events could be recorded at all three sites. For the simulation of ice loads, new methods based on numerical weather prediction models have been developed and validated. Good results could be obtained with respect to the occurrence and the duration of icing events. In contrast, ice loads were not reproduced very accurately. The work served as a basis for the creation of an icing map of Switzerland.
