Summary
Extreme weather conditions can endanger the security of supply in various ways. This study focus on weather events impacting transmission networks. A methodology has been developed to identify plausible and severe common mode failures of power lines. Past weather data, geographic information system (GIS) and contingency analyses are some of the tools used to find these failures. Analyses of thunderstorms and wet snow accretion have been performed on the Swiss transmission network. Vulnerable transmission infrastructures have been identified and measures have been proposed to reduce the vulnerability. These measures include local reinforcements and new power lines.Project Duration
