Feasibility Study: Adaptive Blades for Water Turbines
Dr. M. Farhat, M. Calmon, EPF Lausanne
Summary
The study examines the feasibility of using advanced anisotropic composites for turbine blades in hydroelectricity plants. The blades were able to be adapted to the load by modifying their form. In addition they exhibit improved vibration behaviour since their eigenmodes can be specifically tailored and due to the material's inherent attenuation mechanisms. The manufacturing process for blades made of composites should also result in lower costs.Project Duration
