IEMI - Impact of Intentional Electromagnetic Interference on the Swiss Electric Power System

Prof. F. Rachidi, Dr. R. Cherkaoui, EPF Lausanne
Prof. M. Rubinstein HEIG-VD

Summary

Intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) presents a new hazard for electronic and electrical systems. An attack on the electricity infrastructure could have devastating consequences for the economy and the general public. The aim of this project is to examine the susceptibility of the Swiss electricity infrastructure to IEMI, analyse the implications of an attack and recommend effective protective measures. Based on theoretical studies, situation models will be developed and their results verified in experiments. Critical components of the existing system will be identified, and appropriate technical protection mechanisms developed and tested. The result will present strategies and guidelines for risk mitigation.
