Spallation Drilling

Dr. Pilipp Rudolf von Rohr, Institut für Verfahrenstechnik, ETH Zürich

Summary

Spallation drilling is a procedure whereby extreme heat is applied locally to rock, thus causing the build up of compressive stresses resulting in local rock fracture. In the “Deep geothermal drilling with supercritical flames” project, the foundations for heat transfer and flame stability are being examined in an existing reactor under realistic conditions. The aim of the project is to develop, construct and test a major experimental reactor based on the results obtained. The intention is for the new plant to demonstrate all the technical steps that need to be resolved during the drilling procedure in a size range that will enable scaling up to actual drill-hole size.
